Biodiversity is a serious global issue. There is an estimated number of 3 million to 100 million different plants, animals, and microorganism species that live all around the world in different ecosystems on the planet such as deserts, coral reefs, rain forests, and so much more. Because of the leading causes of biodiversity such as pollution, climate change, clearing forests, and the introductions of species to area's where they are not native, there are species being threatened by extinction. In 2008, a report was created called The Living Planet Report that tracked ecosystems with more than 1,600 freshwater, marine, and terrestrial species between the years 1970 and 2005. Those were the ecosystems most under threat. Terrestrial species dropped by 33%, marine species dropped by 14 percent, and freshwater dropped by 34%.
Most of the world is covered in water, and the oceans make up 96.5% of all of the worlds water. Water clearly being such an important necessity of life of all types of plants, animals, and microorganisms, needs to be clean and properly taken care of. So why do we pollute it so badly to where animals can’t live freely? They’re trapped in all types of plastic debris that is being polluted every day all around the worlds oceans. Animals such as sea turtles, seals, fish, penguins, and more are being strangled and hurt and even killed because of what's going on and it needs to come to an end.
According to the European Commission an estimated 3.5 million tons of trash and litter lays in the oceans around the world. And of that 3.5 million, Americans produce an estimated 30% of the worlds waste. Most of the pollution that goes into the water is plastic. Plastic packing bands that are used on card board boxes and other traveling objects, are being polluted into the ocean and trapped around seals necks and bodies, causing them to be strangled or suffocated.
